Quick answer
Pick Grasshopper if you're a solo founder or a small team of 2 to 10 who needs a professional number with flat-rate pricing. Its Solo Plus plan is $25 a month for unlimited users. Pick RingCentral if you have 20+ employees and need IVR menus, call queues, CRM integrations, compliance or global operations. For most small businesses, RingCentral is overkill.

How I compared Grasshopper and RingCentral
I review a lot of VoIP phone systems and their pricing. For the video, I went through both tools on the things that matter for running your day-to-day business calls: phone numbers, call handling, texting, shared team numbers, desktop apps and integrations. Then I walked through both pricing pages, including RingCentral's AI receptionist bundles, and ran the math for a team of five.
I focused on the VoIP phone system of each company. Both sell much more than phones, which I cover below. For this update, I re-checked both pricing pages on October 19, 2026.
Is Grasshopper the same kind of tool as RingCentral?
No. They offer the same service, but they're different categories of software.
Grasshopper is a virtual phone system. It gives you a professional business number that lives on the phone you already have. There's no extra hardware. You pick a number, download the app and you're live in minutes. It's built around the idea that a small business should sound professional without building a whole phone infrastructure, and paying for one.
RingCentral is a unified communications platform. That's a fancy way of saying it combines phone service, video meetings, team messaging and contact center tools in one system. It was built for mid-size and enterprise companies and has since moved into the small and medium business space. It's also rolling out a full suite of AI tools.
One thing to know if you're comparing beyond the phone: Grasshopper is owned by a parent company called GoTo. GoTo has most of what RingCentral offers, including webinars, meetings and a contact center. Where it may fall behind is AI.
If you're still deciding whether you need a virtual number at all, my guide to picking a virtual phone system covers the basics.
Who is each one built for?
Grasshopper is for the solo founder, freelancer or small business owner who needs a dedicated business line. If you have a team of 2 to 10 and need a shared number without per-user pricing eating you alive, it's a great fit.
RingCentral is for teams of 20 or more with complex routing, department-level phone trees and someone to manage the admin side. If you have compliance requirements, global operations or contact center needs, that's where it shines.
Grasshopper vs RingCentral features
Here's how the two compare on the features you'll use every day.
Feature | Grasshopper | RingCentral |
Phone numbers | Local, toll-free or vanity; every plan includes at least one; extra numbers $9/mo each | Local and toll-free; toll-free minute pool is capped, with overages after |
Call handling | Call forwarding, simultaneous ring, extensions, voicemail, transcription, basic auto attendant | All of that plus IVR menus, call queues, call monitoring, barge and whisper coaching |
Texting | SMS, kept simple | SMS capped per user per month, depending on plan |
Shared team numbers | Added recently; the whole team can see and reply from one line | Available, but the collaboration features need a higher tier |
Desktop app | Yes | Yes |
Integrations | No native CRM integration | 330+ integrations, including CRMs |
Call handling
Grasshopper gives you everything you need to run a professional phone line out of the gate, without thinking about it. If that list covers what you need, you can stop here and sign up for Grasshopper.
RingCentral adds the tools a call center or a large sales team uses: phone menus, call queues and live coaching. If any of those sound useful, look into RingCentral.
Texting
Both support SMS. Grasshopper keeps it simple. RingCentral caps texts per user per month on its lower plans, and its pricing page today also lists a Business SMS Booster add-on for $25.
In my opinion, any phone company that limits minutes or texts is living in the past.
Integrations
This is one of RingCentral's strongest points. If your team lives inside a CRM, RingCentral probably already connects to it.
Grasshopper is a little too simple here. There's no native CRM integration, so if you need Salesforce or HubSpot connected to your phone system, Grasshopper isn't your tool.

Grasshopper vs RingCentral pricing
This is where the comparison gets very clear. Grasshopper charges a flat price for the plan. RingCentral charges for every user.
Grasshopper pricing (from my May 2026 video)
Plan | Price (annual) | What you get |
Entry plan | $14/mo | 1 user, 1 number |
Solo Plus | $25/mo | Unlimited users, 1 number, 3 extensions |
Small Business | $55/mo | Unlimited users, 4 to 5 numbers, unlimited extensions |
Solo Plus is where most people land. I wish it didn't limit extensions, but unlimited users makes it a strong starting point. On Small Business, you can have 2 team members or 25 and the price stays the same. If you just need a basic phone system and want everyone on your team to have access, that's a huge value unlock.
Grasshopper's site still says pricing starts at $14 a month, but I couldn't load the full plan list for this update. Confirm the plan details and the exact number count on Grasshopper's site.
RingCentral pricing (from my May 2026 video)
Plan | Price (annual) | Texting | What it adds |
Core | $20/user/mo | 25 texts/user/mo | No CRM integration |
Advanced | $25/user/mo | 100 texts/user/mo | Call recording, CRM integration, basic analytics |
Ultra | $35/user/mo | Unlimited | Advanced analytics, larger video meetings |
Advanced is where most people will land. Still, 100 texts a month per user is a very low number if you text customers as much as I do.
When you land on RingCentral's site, you can see what you're getting into. The products menu didn't even fit on my laptop screen. It makes sense for a company that size, but it's a lot to sort through.
RingCentral's page today says you can save up to 33% by paying annually, but plan prices didn't load for this update. Confirm on RingCentral's site.
RingCentral's AI receptionist
RingCentral's AI receptionist is a real value add, even if you don't have enterprise-level needs. In my video, the AI receptionist plus RingEX bundle came to $69 a month ($30 plus $39), which may only cover one user. For more users, it looked like you'd pick a phone plan and add $59 a month for the AI receptionist with 100 minutes. Honestly, the pricing page made it hard to tell how this works.
RingCentral's pricing page today says the AI receptionist "starts at $39." Check the current bundles before you budget for it.
What does a team of 5 pay?
Grasshopper costs a fraction of RingCentral for the same five people.
Setup for 5 people | Monthly cost |
Grasshopper Solo Plus | $25 total |
RingCentral Core | $100 |
RingCentral Advanced | $125 |
RingCentral Advanced + AI receptionist | $184 ($125 + $59) |
With Grasshopper, all five people can use the number for $25 a month. You won't get an AI receptionist, but your whole team is covered.
With RingCentral, the minimum is about $100 a month, and that's before compliance fees, add-ons or the AI receptionist. Most teams would likely pick Advanced and add the receptionist, which takes you to about $184 a month.
If your calls bring in revenue and you want a per-user tool with a shared inbox and AI answering included, I compare that option in Quo vs Grasshopper and Quo vs RingCentral.
Should you choose Grasshopper or RingCentral?
Pick Grasshopper if you're a solo founder or you run a small team and want simple flat-rate pricing with no per-user surprises. You get a professional business number without a complicated setup, and you won't be worrying in the back of your mind about what your phone system costs.
Pick RingCentral if you have 20+ employees, or hundreds, who need numbers and systems for different departments and teams. The upside is that you can replace your whole communication stack, phone, video and chat, keep it tied to your CRM, and cover compliance or global calling needs.
My final take
For most small business owners, RingCentral is overkill. It has great brand recognition, but that comes from charging enterprise-level prices to Fortune 500 companies.
Grasshopper does what most small businesses need. The interface isn't the prettiest, but it gets the job done. If neither one fits, see my RingCentral alternatives roundup or my guide to getting a business phone number for your LLC.
