Nextiva AI Receptionist Review: XBert Demo and Pricing (2026)
Every call that hits voicemail is a customer deciding whether to try the next business on their list. I called Nextiva's AI receptionist twice on camera, once to book a spa treatment and once as an angry customer, to see if it could actually hold the front desk.

Missed calls are missed customers, and you literally don't need to miss anyone anymore.

How I tested Nextiva's AI receptionist
I tested XBert live on camera with Jessica from Nextiva. Her team set up a demo business, Desert Luxury Spa, by pointing XBert at a real spa website, and the AI receptionist was named Phoebe. I made two calls to it: a normal booking call and an angry-customer call. Jessica acted as the business owner on the other end, with transfers going to her cell phone.
To be clear about the limits: Nextiva built this setup, not me, and I didn't run XBert inside my own business. I re-checked every price on Nextiva's own pages on October 19, 2026, and the pricing has changed since the video (more on that below).
If you're still figuring out what this category even is, start with my explainer on what an AI receptionist is. This post sticks to Nextiva's version.
What is Nextiva XBert?
XBert is Nextiva's AI receptionist: an AI agent that answers calls, texts and website chats for your business around the clock. Nextiva is a business phone and customer experience platform, and XBert plugs into its voice, text and chat tools.
Here's what XBert does, based on the demo and Nextiva's product page:
Answers calls 24/7, including several at once
Answers FAQs from a knowledge base built off your website
Books, confirms and reschedules appointments, then sends reminders
Collects lead info and qualifies what the caller wants
Texts links and confirmations to the caller's number
Transfers to a real person with the conversation context
Writes call transcripts and summaries for you to review later
Jessica put the goal plainly in the video. It's not meant to replace your staff. It's meant to replace voicemail and missed calls, so your people spend their time on the conversations that need them.
How do you set up the Nextiva AI receptionist?
You set up XBert by pointing it at your website, and it builds a knowledge base in minutes. For our demo, it scraped a real spa website and pulled the treatments and prices from it.
From there you can tweak anything. If your website doesn't list prices and you want the receptionist to quote them, you add them yourself. You also choose the receptionist's:
Name (ours was Phoebe)
Voice and personality
Greeting and the channels it covers
Escalation rules, meaning when it transfers and when it takes a message
Nextiva includes assisted setup at no extra fee. There's also a guided option with pre-built roles for receptionist, sales or support.
Demo 1: Can it book an appointment?
Yes. On the first call, XBert quoted a price, texted me a booking link and transferred me to a human, all in under a minute.
I asked how much the 50-minute Himalayan massage was. Phoebe came back with the Himalayan salt stone ritual at $225, pulled straight from the website. I asked for a link to book on my phone, and she texted it to me right away. I never had to read out my number, because it recognized the number I was calling from.
Then I asked to speak with a human. Phoebe asked if I wanted to be connected to a coworker, I said yes, and a few seconds later Jessica picked up on her cell. That transfer is the part that got me. Honestly, that is wild.
And that means a caller who wants a real person still gets one. The AI handles the easy questions, and anything it can't handle goes to your phone.
Demo 2: How does it handle an angry customer?
XBert stayed calm, apologized, took my details and promised a manager callback, without dodging the complaint.
I called back and played a frustrated customer who lost a shoe at the spa. Before I even got into it, Phoebe remembered I had called a few minutes earlier and asked if I'd reached a manager. That made it feel human.
When I made my complaint, she apologized, repeated the issue back (yes, including the missing shoe), asked for my name, and confirmed she could use my number. She logged it for the manager and said someone would follow up. It honed in on the experience. It didn't run away from it or misinterpret it.
Two details from Jessica matter here:
You decide the escalation points. Nextiva trained this demo to take a message for complaints. You could set it to transfer straight to a manager instead.
The owner gets a summary. The manager sees a note about the upset customer and what happened, and calls back when they have time, instead of a complaint jamming the phone line in the middle of a busy day.
Jessica also said XBert adjusts its tone if the caller gets heated.
What else can XBert do?
Jessica's own tests showed it can handle noisy calls and simple requests like talking louder. She called it from a busy mall, and it focused on her voice and ignored the people talking around her. When she asked it to speak up, it did.
For a plumbing or home services business, the escalation rules are the big one. You can send emergencies straight to a technician while the AI answers routine questions and texts out links, like directions to your shop.
How much does the Nextiva AI receptionist cost?
XBert costs $99 a month, which includes 100 conversations, then $0.99 for each extra conversation. There's no long-term contract on XBert itself, a 14-day free trial and a 30-day money-back guarantee.
A conversation only counts when a call lasts 30 seconds or more, or a text or chat gets three or more AI responses. Wrong numbers and hang-ups don't eat your bundle.
Conversations per month | Monthly XBert cost |
100 | $99 |
200 | $198 |
300 | $297 |
500 | $495 |

XBert is an add-on to a Nextiva plan, so budget for that too. Nextiva's small business plans start at $15 per user per month for Core and $25 for Engage, on annual billing. Nextiva also runs a limited-time bundle: XBert plus one Core license for $99 a month with free setup, for businesses up to 200 employees. That bundle needs a 12-month Core or Engage subscription.
Is it worth $99 a month?
Do the math against one missed call. Jessica's estimate in the video was that a single missed call is worth $100 to $700 in lost business. If XBert catches one booking a month that would have gone to voicemail, it has paid for itself. Over a year, the base plan is $1,188, which is the value of a handful of saved jobs.

What changed since the video
The video was filmed in February 2026. Here's what's different on Nextiva's pages today:
Pricing now starts with a monthly bundle. In the video, Jessica described usage pricing at roughly $1 per conversation. Today it's $99 a month for the first 100, then $0.99 each.
It's sold as an add-on. The video called it both a standalone product and an add-on. Nextiva's product page now says to add XBert to your Nextiva plan, so expect to need a Nextiva account.
It has a name. The AI receptionist is now branded XBert.
Pros and cons
Pros:
Answers calls, texts and website chats 24/7, several at once
Sets itself up from your website in minutes, and you can edit anything it learned
Live transfer to your cell phone worked fast in the demo
Remembers repeat callers and their earlier conversation
Handled an angry caller calmly and logged it for the manager
You only pay for real conversations, not hang-ups
Integrates with Google Calendar, Calendly, Cal.com, Zoho and Housecall Pro, with Salesforce, HubSpot, ServiceTitan and others on request
Cons:
You need a Nextiva plan, so picking XBert also means picking your phone system
The $99 bundle locks you into a 12-month Core or Engage subscription
Costs climb fast for busy lines: $495 a month at 500 conversations
I tested a setup Nextiva built, not one I configured from scratch
Language support isn't listed on the product page. Phoebe said she speaks many languages, but I didn't test that.
Who should use Nextiva XBert?
Pick XBert if you already run your phones on Nextiva, or you're shopping for a phone system and want the AI receptionist from the same company.
It fits businesses where a missed call is a lost booking: spas, salons, clinics, plumbers, HVAC and other home services. The escalation rules make it a good match when some calls are emergencies and most aren't.
Look elsewhere if you want to keep your current phone provider, or you need multiple languages confirmed in writing before you buy.
Nextiva AI receptionist alternatives
The main alternatives are Quo's Sona and CloudTalk's AI Receptionist. Both live inside their own phone systems, the same way XBert lives inside Nextiva.
Tool | Starting price | Pick it if |
Nextiva XBert | $99/mo for 100 conversations | You want the AI receptionist on the same platform as a phone system that can grow into a contact center |
Quo Sona | Included credits on every plan, paid tiers from $25/mo for 40 calls | You're a small team that wants a simple phone system with AI answering built in |
CloudTalk AI Receptionist | From $99/mo for 200 minutes | You want minute-based pricing and smart routing instead of a phone tree |
Quo and CloudTalk prices from their own pricing pages, checked October 18, 2026.
I go deeper on CloudTalk in my AI answering service breakdown, and I compare Nextiva against Quo, Dialpad and others in my RingCentral alternatives ranking. If you run a service business, my list of AI tools for service businesses puts XBert next to the rest of the stack.
My final take
Nextiva's AI receptionist did everything I threw at it in the demo. It quoted a price, texted a link, transferred me to a real person, remembered me on the second call, and handled a complaint without getting weird. That's the job of a front desk, and it does it at 2 AM.
The catch is the phone system. XBert makes the most sense if you're on Nextiva or ready to switch to it. If that's you, start with the free trial and point it at your website.
