Connecteam vs 7shifts (2026): Which Employee App Fits Your Team?

Connecteam and 7shifts both put a schedule, a time clock and team chat on your employee's phone. Underneath, they're built for two very different operations. I compared where they overlap, where they split, and what each one really costs once you open a second location.

Quick answer

Pick Connecteam if you want scheduling, a GPS time clock, checklists, chat, training and a knowledge base in one app, at a flat price for your first 30 users. Pick 7shifts if you run a full-service restaurant built around tip pooling, labor-to-sales math and POS data. 7shifts bills per location, so costs grow with every site you open.

How I tested Connecteam and 7shifts

I compared Connecteam and 7shifts side by side for the video above, going through scheduling, the time clock, the AI scheduling tools, forms and checklists, team communication and pricing on each one. I've also reviewed Connecteam on its own and ranked both apps against When I Work, Sling and Deputy. I re-checked both pricing pages in US dollars on October 18, 2026.

What is the difference between Connecteam and 7shifts?

Connecteam is an all-in-one employee management app for any team that doesn't work at a desk, while 7shifts is scheduling and workforce software built only for restaurants. On the surface they look like the same product: a schedule, a time clock and team chat on your employee's phone. Underneath, they're built for two very different operations.

Connecteam covers food and beverage, construction, field services, home care, cleaning crews and retail. It's split into three hubs: Operations, Communications, and HR & Skills. The time clock, the schedule, forms, chat, training courses and time off requests all live in one app. It has a 4.6 out of 5 on Capterra from more than 4,800 reviews, and over 1 million managers and employees use it.

7shifts is built around restaurant problems: labor cost against sales, tip pooling, POS data and forecasting your Friday night. More than 55,000 restaurants use it, and it holds a 4.7 on Capterra from about 1,200 reviews.

So you can already see the split. One is focused on food service. The other is built to run your whole operation, top to bottom.

Where Connecteam and 7shifts overlap

Both apps handle the scheduling basics well. If a schedule is all you need, either one does the job. Both give you:

  • A drag-and-drop schedule builder

  • Open shifts your team can claim from their phone or desktop

  • Shift swaps with manager approval

  • Availability and time off requests

  • Push notifications when you publish

  • Team messaging and announcements with read tracking, so you know who saw the message

The differences show up in everything around the schedule.

One app vs two: how clocking in works

Connecteam wins here, because the time clock lives in the same app as the schedule. On 7shifts, your employees don't clock in inside the 7shifts app. They punch in through 7punches, a separate time clock app, or a shared tablet.

7shifts did add Mobile Punch, which lets employees clock in from their own phones instead of a shared tablet. It's still tied to the 7punches setup, though. An admin has to turn it on, and getting it can mean upgrading your plan.

To be fair, 7punches comes at no extra cost on the paid plans, and the hours sync back fast. But you're training a possibly high-turnover team on two apps instead of one. Every extra download, login and screen to learn makes the job harder.

With Connecteam, clocking in and out happens on the same screen, with the same login, as the schedule. You get:

  • GPS stamps on every punch

  • Geofencing, so people can only clock in once they're on site

  • Kiosk mode if you'd rather have one shared tablet by the door

  • NFC tags if you want a physical touch point

One app, one download, one login. And if your team is under 10 people, you can run all of it on Connecteam's free plan. Geofencing starts on the Operations Advanced plan, so check your tier if that one matters to you.

Pick Connecteam if: you don't want your team juggling a scheduling app and a separate time clock app.

AI scheduling compared

Connecteam's auto-scheduler works from day one, while 7shifts' auto-scheduler needs sales history, a POS connection and a support ticket.

Connecteam's auto-scheduler fills your whole schedule in one click. It reads availability, roles, qualifications, approved time off and fairness, then flags conflicts before you publish. It also balances front of house against kitchen for you. The auto-assign feature sits on the Operations Expert plan.

7shifts has an auto-scheduler too, but it comes with more requirements:

  • A POS integration pulling live sales

  • 10 weeks of sales history built up inside 7shifts

  • Wages entered for every employee

  • A support ticket to turn it on

When I filmed the video, it was still in beta. If you're a new restaurant, or you're not on a supported POS, it won't be available to you yet.

The rest of Connecteam's AI has no setup requirement at all:

  • An AI assistant your staff can ask in chat, answering from your own procedures

  • Paper-to-digital forms: snap a picture of a paper form and it becomes a digital one

  • An AI course creator: type a training topic and it builds the course

  • Voice input on forms, so staff can speak instead of type

  • Auto-translate on updates and chat, into each employee's preferred language

In most kitchens, that last one might matter more than anything else on the list.

Pick Connecteam if: you want AI scheduling now, without waiting on 10 weeks of sales data. Pick 7shifts if: you already have a supported POS and want schedules built around projected sales.

Forms and checklists after the schedule is published

Connecteam includes unlimited forms and checklists, and 7shifts mostly doesn't offer them. This is about everything that happens after the schedule goes out.

On Connecteam, your opening checklist, closing checklist, walk-in temperature log, line check and incident reports all live in the same app your team clocks in with. Entries are time-stamped, can carry photos, and can be GPS stamped if you need to prove where something was filled out. No more clipboard by the office door that nobody signs until Friday afternoon.

7shifts has a task management add-on at $12.99 per location per month on top of your plan. Its forms are built around HR onboarding paperwork, which is a completely different use case.

Get Connecteam free for up to 10 users

Pick Connecteam if: you run daily checklists, temperature logs or incident reports and want them tied to the same app as the time clock.

Knowledge base and team communication

Connecteam has a knowledge base and an internal help desk, and 7shifts has neither. Every question your staff asks a manager is a minute that manager isn't running the floor.

Connecteam gives you a knowledge base for recipes, allergen sheets and procedures, plus a help desk. Employees type a question and get an instant answer pulled from your knowledge base, without anybody having to reply. Questions go somewhere instead of to someone's phone at 10:00 PM. Announcements, questions and everything in between happen in the same app.

7shifts has chat, announcements and shout-outs for recognition. What it doesn't have is a knowledge base or a help desk. So when your line cook is checking an allergen at 7:00 PM, they're still asking whoever is closest, and now two people are waiting in the middle of the dinner rush.

Pick Connecteam if: your managers keep answering the same questions over and over.

Connecteam vs 7shifts pricing

Connecteam charges a flat rate per hub for your first 30 users, no matter how many locations you have. 7shifts charges per location, then adds per-location and per-employee add-ons. That per-location piece is the one I'd pay the most attention to. When you open a second or third location, your 7shifts bill doubles or triples.

What it costs for a two-location restaurant

Here's a quick example for a restaurant with two locations and 25 employees in total, on annual billing.

Setup

Monthly cost

Connecteam Operations Advanced (schedule, time clock, geofencing, unlimited checklists)

$49

7shifts Pro × 2 locations

$159.98

7shifts Pro × 2 + task management × 2

$185.96

Connecteam's number stays the same whether you have one location or five, as long as you stay at 30 users or fewer on that hub. If you add the Communications and HR & Skills hubs, Connecteam goes to $147 a month on Advanced.

Pick Connecteam if: you have more than one location, or plan to. Pick 7shifts if: you run a single restaurant and 15 or fewer employees fit its free plan.

Which one should you pick?

If you run a full-service restaurant built around front of house, tip pooling and labor-to-sales math, 7shifts is worth a look. It's narrow on purpose, and it's good at exactly that.

For everybody else, and that's most restaurants, Connecteam covers more of your business for less. The schedule, the time clock, checklists and team communication sit in one app your staff already has.

Pros and cons

Connecteam

Pros:

  • Schedule, time clock, forms, chat, training and knowledge base in one app

  • Flat price for the first 30 users, no matter how many locations

  • Free for up to 10 users with all three hubs

  • AI auto-scheduler with no sales-history requirement

Cons:

  • Hub pricing adds up when you need all three

  • Geofencing starts on Advanced, and the AI auto-scheduler is on Expert

  • No built-in tip pooling or POS-based sales forecasting

  • It syncs hours to payroll instead of running payroll itself

7shifts

Pros:

  • Built around restaurant workflows, from tips to labor-to-sales

  • POS integrations and sales-based forecasting

  • Free plan for one location with up to 15 employees

  • Premium bundles tip management, training and payroll's base fee

  • US payroll available

Cons:

  • Clocking in runs through a separate 7punches app or tablet

  • Per-location billing multiplies as you grow

  • Checklists, log book and onboarding are paid add-ons, and tips cost extra below Premium

  • No knowledge base or help desk

  • Auto-scheduler needs a supported POS and 10 weeks of sales history

My final take

7shifts is a solid, focused tool if your restaurant lives and dies by tips, POS data and labor-to-sales targets. For most other teams, including most restaurants, Connecteam does more in one app and costs less once you have a second location. You can get all of it free with under 10 employees, and you can test the paid plans with a 14-day free trial.
